Canada has confirmed a new tranche of munitions for the Ukrainian Armed Forces to defend against Russia’s invasion.
Canadian Defence Minister Anita Anand made the announcement during a Ukraine Defense Contact Group virtual meeting led by US counterpart Lloyd Austin.
The donation includes approximately 8,000 rounds of 155-millimeter ammunition and 12 air defense missiles from Canada’s military inventory.
Canada will also supply Ukraine with over 1,800 rounds of 105-millimeter tank training ammunition for Leopard 1 main battle tanks pledged by Germany, Denmark, and the Netherlands.
“Canada stands firm with Ukraine in the fight against Russia’s illegal and unjustifiable war,” Anand stated.
“We are strengthening our collaboration with our Allies and partners and are continuing to respond to Ukraine’s military needs with comprehensive military aid.”
“We will continue to do whatever it takes to safeguard freedom, democracy, and the rules-based international order.”
Leopard 2 Tanks for Ukraine
During the meeting, Anand confirmed the start of Leopard 2 deliveries committed by Canada last February.
Four of the eight planned tanks have already been sent to Poland to train Ukrainian warfighters.
Alongside the Leopard 2s, additional ammunition, ancillary equipment, and an armored recovery vehicle previously pledged by Canada are scheduled for shipment to Ukraine in the coming weeks.
One Year of Military Assistance
Since February last year, Canada has committed more than 1 billion Canadian dollars ($739 million) in military aid to Ukraine.
The most notable donations included National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS), armored combat and support vehicles, anti-tank weapons, M777 Howitzers, small arms, and high-resolution drone cameras.
