The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) has demonstrated a new battle management system (BMS) for the Swedish Armed Forces.
Called the BMS 3.1.2, the capability grew out of trials to develop a command support system for the combat vehicles of the Swedish Army’s two training companies.
Progress in Swedish BMS Development
An initial system, dubbed the LSS Mark 2.0, was fielded in 2021 but had technical deficiencies, according to FMV.
In 2022, the agency formed a team with the Swedish military and partner industries to repair the Mark 2.0. The revamped BMS 3.1.2 was produced and tested in the same year.
Part of the trials involved an evaluation of the new BMS platform’s compatibility with Radio System 570 and related equipment.
“The verifications have generally gone well and the improvements we saw during the autumn remain. The users once again agree that the system has been improved,“ FMV Systems Engineer Zakarias Priebe said.
Improvements integrated into the BMS 3.1.2 include stabilization, radio speech quality, and range operability.
“The most obvious shortcomings for the soldiers were experienced in the speech connection,” Priebe said.
A ‘Motivating’ Effort
The new BMS is undergoing final preparations for real-world scenarios before its delivery to the armed forces in spring.
“I think it is important for FMV to work closely with the Armed Forces, not only at a higher level but also close to the end user, in order to be able to deliver according to the Armed Forces’ needs and expectations,” Priebe stated.
“We could not have done this without their support, including during the field weeks when we tested the system.”
“Personally, I think this work has been as much fun as anything. It is motivating to solve problems and to see the systems in reality, that the subsystems came together and worked so well together.”
