BAE Unveils Kit That Turns Air-Launched Unguided Bomb Into Precision Weapon
BAE Systems Australia has unveiled a smart munition kit concept that turns an air-launched unguided bomb into a precision weapon.
The Razer system comprises a winged body kit and tail unit and is equipped with a powered GPS/INS guidance control and navigation system.
The precision winged kit allows the free-falling munition to float, increasing its range.
The system is compatible with 40-50 kilogram (88-110 pounds) standard non-guided munitions and is intended for uncrewed aerial vehicles and rotary-wing aircraft.
To Bridge Expensive/Cheap Weapons Gap
The company claims the system will bridge the gap between “inexpensive, short-range, land-based weapons of this caliber and the expensive, long-range, air-launched weapon systems.”
“Razer addresses a clear gap in the market for sovereign guided weapons. It will enable our Australian Defence Force ease of access to world-class munitions right here in Australia,” said BAE Systems Australia CEO Ben Hudson.
Potential Customers
System development is expected to take months, including “acquisition and testing of software, hardware, mechanical sub-systems and other system elements of this system.”
The company hopes to sell the system to Australia and international customers like the US, the UK, Canada, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Norway.
“Razer can meet urgent local and overseas demand for low-cost sovereign munition solutions that could be deployed from the air. It could deliver a powerful and affordable battlefield strike capability for users globally,” Hudson added.
