The Norwegian Navy plans to acquire new vessels for its Coastal Ranger Commando unit to improve its maritime patrol capabilities.
Described as the “eyes and ears of the service,” the unit operates in littoral combat theaters, filling marine corps and coastal artillery roles.
The ships will have a top speed of 45 knots (83 kilometers/51 miles per hour) and must be able to accommodate a crew of six and a platoon of coastal rangers with their equipment.
Additionally, the navy wants the vessels to have shallow draughts, good maneuverability, and the ability to stop and accelerate quickly.
They must also be versatile platforms, with the ability to be converted easily from troop transport to medical evacuation vehicles.
Additional Requirements
To improve the lethality and survivability of the commando vessels, the Norwegian Navy seeks the installation of sophisticated sensors and remote weapon stations for targeting both surface and slower aerial targets.
Their hulls must also be larger than the CB90-class fast assault craft developed for the Swedish Navy.
Another feature of the naval platform will be its ability to host 150-kilogram (330-pound) drones for improved surveillance and reconnaissance.
Procurement is expected to take place in 2026.
