F-16 Block 70/72 Electronic Warfare System Achieves Critical Design Review
The F-16 Block 70/72 electronic warfare (EW) system achieved critical design review recently, developer L3Harris Technologies announced.
Lockheed Martin and the US Air Force selected L3Harris to design the AN/ALQ-254(V)1 Viper Shield in 2021.
The system is solely designed for the F-16 Block 70/72, which is intended for foreign military sales.
Viper Shield Features
Viper Shield’s software-defined technology components reveal digital radar threats and provide digital countermeasures in a fully integrated, internally mounted system, according to the company.
The system’s advanced digital radar warning receiver integrates with the aircraft’s new APG-83 active electronically scanned array radar, providing greater situational awareness.
“The digital radio frequency memory-based jamming system provides enhanced capability against advanced threats,” the company said.
The system demonstrated interoperability with the APG-83 radar in late 2022.
