The Organization for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR) has awarded Thales a three-year service contract to support the S1850M volume search radars of the British, Italian, and French naval forces.

Work will involve on-site technical assistance, associated desk support services, and the employment of Thales’ Customer Portal.

The contract includes annual obsolescence checks, configuration management, and monitoring for covered capabilities.

Thales will also host an annual Customer Days event to meet with OCCAR representatives and the three navies throughout the program.

Thales S1850M Radar

The S1850M 3D multibeam radar is based on Thales’ SMART-L volume search long-range radar equipped with principal anti-air missile systems of the UK Royal Navy’s Type 45 destroyers, Queen Elizabeth carriers, and Italian and French Horizon-class frigates.

The S1850 features an open architecture for compatibility with future systems. It is programmed with automatic tracking and detection for up to 1,000 aerial and stealth targets at 400 kilometers (250 miles).

NATO Capability

According to Thales, 26 SMART-L and S1850M systems have been delivered to various European navies, making both “de facto NATO standard” for long-range naval radars.

“This service contract proves that Thales’ naval sensors can meet user requirements for a great many years,” Thales Above Water Systems Vice President Gerben Edelijn stated.

“We are glad to keep supporting three of Europe’s leading navies in their mission to protect their nations, personnel and valuable assets.”

“This contract demonstrates the increasing need for cooperation between defence organizations and industry in Europe. Uniformity of equipment facilitates this cooperation.”
