The US Army has awarded Indiana-based Allison Transmission a $51-million contract to support the modernization of the service’s and US foreign military sale customers’ Abrams main battle tanks.

Under the agreement, the company will provide its X1100-3B1 transmission, related technical support, and tank upgrades.

Work for the program will be conducted at the firm’s facility in Indianapolis, Indiana, from January 2023 to March 2024.

“The Abrams is the most prevalent main battle tank in the free world, and the recent announcement of defense sales expanding to Taiwan, Australia, and Poland increases its presence to eight US partner nations,” Allison Transmission Defense Programs President Dana Pittard said.

“Allison is proud to support the US Army and our global customers today and for decades to come.”

Other US Army Contracts

In July, Allison signed an agreement to provide its X1100-5B propulsion system for the US Army M88A3 Heavy Equipment Recovery Combat Utility Lift and Evacuation System (HERCULES) prototype vehicle.

The US Army contracted the firm to supply its 3040 MX transmission in support of the Mobile Protected Firepower program the same month.

In August, the army selected Allison to produce an electric hybrid sub-system that will be integrated into future armored combat vehicles.

“Allison is proud of our relationships with the US Army and the world’s finest defense vehicle manufacturers,” Pittard added.

“The future is very exciting as Allison will have a new defense production program launch every year for the next several years.”
