South Korea has agreed to establish a defense innovation committee to bolster the military through cutting-edge technologies.
According to Korea’s Ministry of National Defense, the presidential committee would facilitate interagency cooperation between the public and private sectors to devise plans and strategies for military innovation.
President Yoon Suk-yeol will serve as committee chair, while the country’s national security adviser, defense minister, and experts will be members.
Defense Innovation 4.0
The new committee is expected to strengthen the country’s military modernization plan, Defense Innovation 4.0.
The defense ministry has been pushing the plan to harness advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence and robotics, to increase Korea’s capabilities amid growing threats from Pyongyang.
The modernization initiative is also an effort to address potential troop shortages, as South Korea has recorded the lowest birth rate worldwide for two years straight.
