Rheinmetall has received a 182-million-euro ($191.9 million) contract to deliver two Skynex air defense systems for an international customer.
Alongside the system, the company signed a memorandum of understanding to supply Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicle HX trucks valued at 12 million euros ($12.7 million).
Both packages will be delivered to the undisclosed customer by 2024.
Rheinmetall’s Skynex
Skynex uses an automatic cannon system that specializes in targeting very short-range threats that guided missiles cannot intercept.
It works with Rheinmetall-built programmable 35-millimeter Ahead ammunition that cannot be jammed by electronic countermeasures.
According to the company, the munition was used in the self-propelled Flakpanzer Gepard anti-aircraft system by Ukrainian forces in their conflict with Russia, as it is effective against airborne threats such as drones and cruise missiles.
Air Defense Flexibility
Skynex’s performance can be enhanced when integrated with Rheinmetall’s Skyshield modular short-range air defense and Skyguard radar system.
It can also be used in conjunction with other air defense systems and radars.
Skynex uses sensors and effectors for remote command and engagement field mapping, simplifying target location and relaying information across connected air defense capabilities.
“The advanced Skynex air defence system is based on a concept that keeps airspace surveillance separate from the effectors,” a Rheinmetall statement said.
“Owing to this modularity, and depending on the mission, the necessary assets can be linked to the command-and-control network. The system enables integration of radar equipment from various manufacturers.”
