Norway has announced it will provide 150 million Norwegian kroner ($15 million) to the European Union to support training missions for Ukrainian troops.
The aid will contribute to the ongoing EU Military Assistance Mission (EUMAM) for Ukraine launched earlier this month by Brussels.
The funds will be delivered through the European Peace Facility and utilized for the overall operating budget of the training scheme.
“Ukraine depends on support from other countries, not least to obtain sufficient weapons and material to stand up to Russian warfare,” Norwegian Defense Minister Bjørn Arild Gram said.
Maintaining Contributions
The EUMAM initiative is a “flexible and scalable” mission to address Ukrainian forces’ long-term needs amidst their conflict with Russia.
In the first training phase, the EU plans to hone the skills of at least 15,000 Ukrainian personnel. Both basic and specialist drills are included in the training.
Alongside the EUMAM contribution, the Norwegian government is engaged in other projects for Ukrainian defense, including constructing a field hospital in partnership with Estonia and providing five military ambulance vehicles.
“Norway has provided considerable support and will continue to contribute with donations of military material,” Gram emphasized
“It is important for Norwegian and European security that Russia does not win its war against Ukraine. Ukrainian forces are fighting an important battle for democracy and justice.”
Norway’s Recent Military Aid for Ukraine
Norway’s latest donation follows a previous $30 million in aid to finance military equipment for Ukrainian troops.
This month, Norway also announced an additional $150 million in military support for the UK-led International Fund for Ukraine, which builds on the country’s 2022 pledge for Ukraine of $300 million.
