Aero Vodochody Trainer Prototype Completes Maiden Flight

Aero Vodochody has completed the first flight of its latest L-159 T2X combat trainer aircraft prototype in the Czech Republic.

The demonstration follows a four-year modernization of the jet to meet the requirements of fifth-generation pilot training programs.

“We have developed a new wing and an integral tank that increases the range, especially for two-seat configurations,” chief designer Milos Trnobransky said. “It will also allow us to increase the number of usable wing pylons.”

“We also plan to integrate completely redesigned avionics and precision weapons technology against ground targets.”

“With the upgrade, we want to ensure long-term and efficient use of the aircraft for our customers.”

L-159 Honey Badger Trainers

Aero Vodochody deploys the L-159 Honey Badger trainers to support engineers in testing new avionics and design features during production. The aircraft is in service with the Czech and Iraqi armed forces.

Before the L-159 T2X prototype development, the company had already produced 86 L-159 jets in various configurations.

Recently, Aero Vodochody signed a cooperation agreement with Draken Europe to use L-159E models as an aggressor to train British Royal Air Force combat pilots.

The US Air Force has also used L-159 jets as adversary support to train pilots with radar and weapons capability.
