Hyundai Rotem has entered into a collaborative agreement with Norway’s Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace to develop unmanned turrets for next-generation military vehicles.
The South Korean firm said a memorandum of understanding was signed by the two companies during the DX Korea 2022 defense exhibition in Goyang.
According to reports, the autonomous turrets could be integrated into Hyundai’s Next Generation Main Battle Tank (NGMBT) and the Next Generation Wheeled Armored Vehicle.
The two cutting-edge military vehicles, still in development, were displayed at the DX Korea 2022.
The South Korean company will also integrate Kongsberg technologies such as remote weapon systems into its existing platforms, including the K2 main battle tank and K808 armored vehicle.
The companies also agreed to cooperate in developing and selling more weapon systems for global customers.
Next-Generation Main Battle Tank
Earlier this year, Hyundai Rotem unveiled the NGMBT concept, which features new technologies for improved mobility, firepower, and protection.
The tank will have a capsule-like crew compartment, allowing operations on various terrain and under extreme weather conditions.
It will be powered by a diesel engine, providing a maximum speed of 50 kilometers (31 miles) per hour in off-road conditions.
The unmanned turrets will operate alongside the latest generation of communication and observation equipment.
