Raytheon and Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd. have live-tested the Medium Range Interceptor Capability (MRIC) to examine the integration of its key components.

The MRIC is a modified Israeli Iron Dome interceptor integrated with the US Marine Corps’ AN/TPS-80 Ground/Air Task Oriented Radar and Common Aviation Command and Control System.

The trailer-mounted system has been developed for expeditionary operations. It detects, tracks, identifies, and defeats cruise missiles, manned, and unmanned aircraft.

Final Decision in 2022

“This test proved the interoperability of sensors and effectors working together as an integrated air and missile defense capability,” President of Land Warfare & Air Defense at Raytheon Missiles & Defense Tom Laliberty said.

“The demonstration showcased the benefits of integration, extending the capabilities of individual systems into a solution greater than the sum of its parts.”

The Marines approved the MRIC prototype production following a successful design review in May 2021.

The service will reportedly decide the system’s fate after a series of tests in 2022, examining its ability to intercept cruise missiles and “high-end threats used by near-peer adversaries.”
