Germany plans to deliver Counter Battery Radar (Cobra) systems to Ukraine to take out Russian artillery guns, Welt has reported.

Five Cobras of its stock of 19 could be shipped to Ukraine, the outlet stated.

The radar’s active, phase-controlled antenna “scans the horizon and recognizes or tracks projectiles and rockets until the precise launch coordinates, and possibly also the impact coordinates, can be determined,” the German military explained.

Simultaneously Locates 40 Enemy Positions

The vehicle-mounted radar is capable of spotting 40 enemy artillery positions, mortars, and rocket launchers within a range of 100 kilometers (62 miles) within two minutes, the military added.

The vehicle can travel at 90 kilometers (56 miles) per hour for up to 550 kilometers (342 miles) without refueling.

Enables Accurate Counter Fire

The Cobra enhances the accuracy of artillery such as the Panzerhaubitze 2000 long-range armored howitzer the German government is considering shipping to Ukraine. The gun has a range of 30-60 kilometers (18.5-37 miles) depending upon the projectile.

In addition, Spexer radars and Nightowl cameras are also being discussed.

The Spexer is used to detect aircraft such as drones, helicopters, and fighters, along with armored vehicles, whereas the Nightowl camera can spot vehicles at night from several kilometers away.
