Technology firm Rohde & Schwarz has announced that it will design and deliver an integrated communications system (ICS) for the Hunter-class frigates of the Royal Australian Navy.
The announcement comes after BAE Systems awarded a subcontract to Rohde & Schwarz that allows for additional work related to the country’s Hunter Class Frigate Program.
The New South Wales-based company will utilize its experience in integrating an ICS into various types of vessels, such as Type 26 frigates and the Evolved Cape-class Patrol Boats.
The firm claims that the ICS will “revolutionize” on-board communications for the Australian navy while implementing the most modern multi-level security architecture for naval vessels.
In addition to the ICS delivery, Rohde & Schwarz will provide related program management, systems engineering, integration, installation, and verification services.
‘A Great Step Forward’
Rohde & Schwarz managing director Gareth Evans said that being a part of the Hunter Class frigate Program is a “clear validation” of Australia’s intent to create opportunities for the local defense industry.
He further stated that the company would maximize opportunities to assist in manufacturing, integrating, testing, and commissioning the ICS.
Meanwhile, BAE Systems managing director Craig Lockhart asserted that the participation of Rohde & Schwarz in the program should be considered “a great step forward” for the Australian defense sector.
“As we now progress past the Systems Definition Review our relationship with original equipment manufacturers will increase significantly,” he stressed. “Rohde & Schwarz will provide fundamental design inputs for our Communications capability on Hunter.”
