India has received simulators and training equipment for the S-400 air defense missile system from Russia, according to a report by ANI, citing “defense sources.”

The delivery did not include missiles or launchers, sources told the Indian news agency.

About the S-400

India signed a 35,000 crore Indian rupee ($5 billion) deal with Russia for the S-400 in 2018. Russia will provide five squadrons to India for tackling air threats up to a range of 400 kilometers (249 miles).

The missile system has been developed from the S-300 family and was approved for service in Russia in 2007.

India has for long been one of the biggest importers of Russian defense equipment and has procured fighter jets including Sukhoi Su-30, Mi-17 helicopters, and tanks like the T-92 and T-72.

Procurement Amid Economic Sanctions on Russia

India is receiving the equipment despite the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. However, concern remains over the payment for the delivery, as Moscow reels under economic sanctions from the West.

Meanwhile, the United States is mulling sanctions against New Delhi for violating the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act for the procurement of the missile system.
