The Belgian military has awarded a 19 million euros ($21.2 million) contract to German firm Dynamit Nobel Defence to supply shoulder-fired RGW90 high-explosive anti-tank weapon systems.
The RGW90 is a 90-millimeter man-portable weapon for use by infantry and special forces to engage and destroy ground-based targets, including main battle tanks, lightly armored vehicles, fortified facilities, bunkers, and fixed shelters.
Currently used by many European and international armed forces, the anti-tank weapon system can be operated from confined spaces.
According to the manufacturer, the weapon system will help ensure that the Belgian military has a high level of operational capability for many years to come.
“Dynamit Nobel Defence is honored to have received this order and proud to remain a partner of the Belgian Armed Forces in the field of shoulder-fired munitions,” the company said, adding that it is willing to negotiate with other allied armed forces for similar procurement.
In addition to the weapon systems, the contract requires the defense company to provide training ammunition for RGW90 sub-caliber trainer systems.
Additional Features
The RGW90 weapon system can be equipped with a fire control system (FCS) for improved accuracy and precise target acquisition. The FCS consists of an optical sight, a night vision system, laser rangefinder, and ballistic computer.
The sighting system can provide up to three-times magnification, while its laser rangefinder can locate targets over a range of one kilometer (0.6 miles) with high accuracy.
Operators have two warhead options: the high-explosive anti-tank and the high-explosive squash head. Both can provide a high rate of fire against ground targets in difficult combat situations.
Additionally, developers ensured that the weapon can be upgraded for enhanced performance against tactical threats at long range.
