South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) has signed an agreement with LIG Nex1 and Hanwha Systems to begin mass production of ground communication devices.

As part of the nearly $750 million contract, the two companies will supply eight military satellite communication system-II ground terminals to the country’s armed forces from 2021 to 2025.

The devices will be used for joint operations with the Asian nation’s first communication satellite, the Anasis-II, launched last year.

Integration of the ground communication devices into the Anasis-II is expected to enhance the military’s capabilities to cope with emerging network-centric warfare, allowing increased transmission capacity and security.

“The mass production of ground-based devices for the military’s satellite information system will enhance its defense capabilities and also contribute to the development of the space defense industry,” DAPA said, as quoted by Yonhap News Agency.
