BAE Systems unveiled its latest CV90 combat vehicle featuring the new D-series turret at the Defence and Security Equipment International in London.
The addition of a 50mm new turret to the CV90 was part of a $500 million upgrade contract for the CV9035NL. The position of the primary weapon was changed, partly for improved vehicle balance and to allow room for a better set of weapons, improving the lethality of the combat vehicle.
The design and function of the new turret is the product of a collaboration between seven countries that currently operate the CV90 fleet, collectively known as the “CV90 User Club.”
Tommy Gustafsson-Rask, managing director of BAE Systems Hägglunds, said that the new configurations give “improved protection and increased combat efficiency” to CV90 operators.
“It represents our continued commitment to delivering the most modern, advanced Infantry Fighting Vehicle that meets our customers’ requirements now and in the future,” he added.
Other improvements to the new CV90 include the latest generation of sensors, AI, and Augmented Reality software that will increase the CV90’s multi-domain capabilities on the battlefield.
The CV90
The CV90 is a Swedish, tracked combat vehicle that was first deployed in 1993. Currently, the United States and the Czech Republic are seen as potential new operators of the system.
The vehicle is designed for mobility in harsh environments such as snow and wet weather, while being able to carry a large payload and deliver excellent firepower.
As of now, there are 1,280 CV90s in operation in 15 different variants.
