French aerospace and defense firm Thales has been awarded a contract to provide new avionics equipment for Rafale fighters to enhance their operational effectiveness.
The company will supply the cutting-edge French combat aircraft with digital multi-function displays and Scorpion helmet-mounted sight and display systems.
Thales pointed out that aircrews have to analyze more data in less time during missions in complex environments with the current Rafales system. But with the new sight and display systems, crews will be able to respond to various threats more quickly and with greater agility.
“The helmet-mounted display symbology brings together information from the aircraft’s onboard sensors to help pilots perform their missions even in the most challenging situations,” the company said in a press release, adding that the new systems can enhance tactical situational awareness of pilots.
Meanwhile, the digital multi-function display Thales is providing keeps the pilot constantly updated on all aircraft systems. It also features a larger display area, greater processing power, and an improved touchscreen interface.
The Rafale Fighter
The Rafale is a twin-jet combat aircraft developed by international aircraft manufacturer Dassault Aviation. It can carry out various missions, including ground and sea attack, air defense and air superiority, reconnaissance, and nuclear strike deterrence.
The warplane is equipped with a twin-gun pod and 30mm cannon, which can fire up to 2,500 rounds per minute. It also has laser designation pods for laser guidance of air-to-ground missiles.
The French fighter is powered by two M88-2 engines suitable for both low-altitude penetration and high-altitude interception missions.
The changes Thales will make are expected to bolster its aerial capabilities while also ensuring maximal pilot comfort. Approximately 350 sight and display systems and 400 digital multi-function displays will reportedly be delivered to the French armed forces for Rafale enhancements.
