The German military has awarded Rheinmetall a potential 178 million euro ($210 million) contract to supply 130,000 laser light modules to enhance soldier’s night fighting capability.
Initial Delivery
Initially, 2,460 devices worth a total of 3 million euro ($3.5 million) will be delivered to the Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces) within seven years, the Düsseldorf-based defense firm stated.
The delivery will begin this year, starting with an initial batch of 360 devices.
Compatible With Bundeswehr Rifles
The device can be mounted on all Bundeswehr assault rifles, submachine guns, machine guns, and sniper rifles through a standard attachment.
The German armed forces have selected Rheinmetall’s latest-generation LLM-VarioRay laser light module, intended to be used by infantry soldiers for “detecting, identifying and marking targets.”
The Device
The device weighs 250 grams and operates via trigger cable.
“It features a powerful white lamp, a red-light laser marker, an infrared laser marker and an electrically focusable infrared illuminator. The light source can be selected with a rotary switch and is infinitely adjustable,” Rheinmetall wrote.
“The device has a fully integrated, factory-aligned laser block, enabling easy adjustment and alignment of the aiming device and weapon. Together with night observation and thermal imaging devices, it lets German troops perform a full range of operational missions around the clock and in all weathers.”
