Defense firm Thales has announced production of the TUUM-6 underwater digital communication system for the Spanish Navy.
The company said its Spanish subsidiary is developing an underwater telephone that will be included with the country’s new F110 frigates through a press release.
The contract was signed in 2019 to help Spanish naval forces conduct missions in a “heightened underwater threat environment.”
“The contract, the transfer of know-how from the parent company and the start-up of production of the TUUM-6 represent a milestone in the history of Thales and represent a clear demonstration of the company’s commitment to increasing industrial production in Spain,” Thales stated.
Other Developments
Last month, the country’s F-110 frigate program successfully passed a Preliminary Design Review by the Spanish Ministry of Defense, Spanish Navy, and local shipbuilder Navantia.
“The Preliminary Design Review has confirmed the soundness of the design of this frigate, which will represent a technological leap in the capabilities of the Spanish Navy and in the digital transformation of Navantia,” Navantia President Ricardo Domínguez remarked.
The Spanish Air Force also took delivery of two MQ-9A Block 5 remotely-piloted aircraft and a Ground Control Station (GCS) in November of last year.
