Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov on Wednesday announced plans to partner with aerospace design firm Sukhoi in developing two-seater fifth-generation Su-57 fighters for export.

The aircraft is a multi-role combat asset designed to destroy air, ground, and naval targets. It is capable of supersonic cruising speed and furnished with advanced on board radio-electronic equipment.

“There is interest in this aircraft and, in my view, it will grow with every passing year as our Russian Army is supplied with this model. Foreign customers at first look at how a particular weapon of the Russian Armed Forces operates,” Borisov explained.

“The Defense Ministry and the Sukhoi Design Bureau have plans to develop a two-pilot aircraft that will boost the export demand for this model … and it may create additional demand,” he added.

Earlier this month, Russia’s state arms seller Rosoboronexport said five Southeast Asian countries are interested in acquiring the latest version of the fifth-generation Su-57 fighter.

More Su-57 Fighters by 2024

Last year, Russia’s Aerospace Force received its first Su-57. It is being used both as an attack plane and an air dominance fighter, since its aerodynamic configuration means there is less likelihood of being detected by radar or infrared.

In addition to a powerful onboard computer and radar system, the aircraft is equipped with hypersonic missiles and has been tested under combat conditions in Syria.

By late 2024, the military will reportedly receive 22 additional Su-57s to bolster its arsenal. The number is expected to grow to 76 by 2028.

“This plane can be in demand in flight personnel’s training to lower the psychological stress of inexperienced pilots, and also to perform lengthy flights over featureless terrain,” Russian state tech corporation Rostec said.

“Let us note that no country in the world has two-seat fifth-generation fighters. The Sukhoi may become the first one,” it added.
