Travis Air Force Base Launches Drone-Based Perimeter Security System

The system activated upon receiving a distress call, dispatches a small UAS to the affected site, and flies back to its base once the task is deemed over.

After Tyndall Air Force base announced it will soon have robot dogs patrolling its perimeter, Travis Air Force base on the other side of the country has now launched an automated security system patrolled by drones for its California federal property.

Easy Aerial, a small unmanned aerial system (sUAS) monitoring solutions provider, in collaboration with the 60th Security Forces Squadron, is putting up the first automated drone-based perimeter security system for the US Air Force in Travis.

“Easy Aerial’s unmanned aerial systems are a game-changer,” said Master Sgt. Joshua Hicks, 60th SFS small UAS system instructor. “This jointly developed technology will provide unparalleled security and safety for our Airmen and critical assets.”

Drone Flies Over to Site Upon Receiving Alarm

The Smart Air Force Monitoring System is activated upon receiving a fence alarm, fire alarm, or other distress call, dispatching a small UAS to the affected site from its bases, the Tyndall Air Force wrote in a statement.

The autonomous aerial vehicle provides unparalleled situational awareness to the monitoring staff and once the task is deemed over it flies back to its base to be recharged.

“The sUAS has the capability to assist civil engineering for fire response, maintenance for tail inspections … and that is just the beginning,” said Ivan Stamatovski, Easy Aerial chief technology officer. “The impact this program is going to have on the Air Force will be seen in many different capacities.”

The system is part of the Small Business Innovation Research Phase II program, which adheres to Air Force perimeter security and situational awareness operational requirements.

“This was a joint effort as we worked closely together from start to finish, resulting in a customized solution for the Air Force that meets all of their operational desires and requirements,” said Stamatovski.
