Department of Defense Taps Immervision to Develop Wide Angle Camera for Drone Applications

The US Department of Defense has awarded Immervision InnovationLab a contract to develop a computer vision wide angle camera for the Blue UAS Framework Project in small drones.

Montreal-based Immervision InnovationLab announced yesterday that it has received an award from the Defense Innovation Unit, a division of the Department of Defense (DoD), to develop a computer vision wide angle camera as part of its Blue UAS project effort for use in commercial and defense small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUAS).

The camera being developed by the Immervision InnovationLab team will provide wide-angle advanced low-light vision for commercial and defense drones — the latter being of particular interest to the DoD for combat and security applications.

Alessandro Gasparini of Immervision said the company is “honored” to be chosen for the project. “We look forward to working with the DIU to deliver secured, highly advanced sUAS cameras for the U.S. Department of Defense’s applications,” he added.

Immervision has more than 20 years of experience in the development of aerospace and action camera technology, video surveillance for commercial applications, and consumer electronics such as mobile phones. 

Providing wide-angle field of vision with “edge-to-edge augmented resolution,” the company’s optical technologies are designed to withstand extreme conditions while enabling smart devices to capture and process high resolution data, employing “wide-angle lenses and imaging software technology for AI, machine vision and user applications” for a variety of industries.
