Explosion reported near Coalition base in Ayn Issa, Syria

The Defense Post

An explosion was reported near a military base near Ayn Issa in Syria’s Raqqa governorate, where U.S. and French troops fighting Islamic State alongside the Syrian Democratic Forces are believed to be posted.

The blast was reported around 10 a.m. local time (0700 GMT) on Monday, June 4. Around 200 U.S. and 75 French troops are reported to be stationed at the base, formerly home to the 93rd Brigade of the Syrian Army.

The number of injuries is unknown.

A spokesperson for the Coalition told The Defense Post they were aware of the media reports but had no information from troops on the ground.

“We are aware of open source reports of an explosion near Raqqa, but do not have any reports from our troops on the ground. The Coalition is monitoring the situation closely,” the spokesperson said.

“No Coalition troops were present at or affected by any recent explosions near Ain Issa.”

Ayn Issa was previously the interim home of the Raqqa Civil Council and is a frequent site of meetings between Coalition and SDF officials.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
