A British military jet used by the Royal Air Force’s Red Arrows aerobatic display team crashed on Tuesday at a base in Wales, the U.K. Ministry of Defence said.

Two people were on board when aboard the aircraft before it crashed at RAF Valley on the island of Anglesey. The pilot survived and is receiving medical care, but the engineer died in the incident, the Ministry of Defence said.

Earlier, a Ministry of Defence spokesperson said they were “aware of an incident today at RAF Valley involving a Hawk aircraft.”

“We are investigating the incident and it would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage,” the spokesperson added.

Police confirmed they attended the scene.

Wreckage from the jet could be seen close to the runway.

The Red Arrows, Hawk fast jets flown by experienced military pilots, are known around the world for their daring stunts.

They are based at RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire, eastern England.
