Abnaa ul-Calipha (Islamic State in Somalia)
Formed in October 2015, Abnaa ul-Calipha (Islamic State in Somalia) was recognized by Islamic State as an official wilayat, or province, in December 2017 when it was called Wilayat al Somal. The group operates in the semi-autonomous Puntland region of Somalia and is estimated to have around 300 active fighters. Abnaa ul-Calipha is an al-Shabaab splinter and and al-Shabaab has ordered the killing of its members who defected to Abnaa ul-Calipha. U.S. Africa Command began carrying out airstrikes against the group in November 2017.
